False Alarms

We are committed to helping our customers reduce false alarms, and the unnecessary strain they can cause on emergency officials. Based on our many years of experience, we’ve noticed that the largest single cause of false alarms is human error. Simply making sure all users are properly trained, and understand how to use the system can go a long way to preventing false alarms.

For home systems:

Common False Alarm Causes

  • Using the wrong keypad code
  • Forgetting to close doors and windows before arming the system
  • Re-entering your home after arming, without disarming (trying to beat the arming delay)
  • Pets, or other innocent movement activating motion sensors.
  • Faulty equipment
  • Battery failure

To reduce your false alarms

  • Instruct all users (even babysitters, cleaning crew, and dog walkers) on how to use the system
  • Know how much time you have to leave after setting your alarm
  • Alert our monitoring center of all user changes (adding and updating users and verbal passcodes)
  • Make sure all doors and windows are closed before arming the system
  • Keep moving items (such as balloons) away from motion detectors
  • For pet owners, consider adding pet immunity to motion sensors
  • Have our service team inspect your system to ensure that equipment is working properly

For commercial systems:

Common False Alarm Causes

  • Employees not following procedures
  • Using the wrong keypad code
  • Suppliers and vendors with open access not properly trained on how to use the system
  • Faulty equipment
  • Battery failure
  • Acts of nature

To reduce your false alarms

  • Ensure all employees, and appropriate vendors, have their own security code and understand how to operate the system.
  • Arrange for regularly scheduled refresher training to ensure everyone knows about system changes
  • Move objects away from motion detectors
  • Make sure hanging signs and curtains are not affected by air vents (which could activate motion detectors)
  • In warehouses, instruct forklift operators to avoid striking door sensors and motion detectors
  • Make sure exterior doors and windows fit tightly in their frames, so strong winds do not cause excessive movement
  • Review your user list often, and advise our monitoring center of any changes (adding and updating users and verbal passcodes)
  • Have your system regularly inspected by our service team to ensure that equipment is working properly
