How to Set Up Video Analytics Triggers

December 13th, 2019

Get enhanced security for your home or business with Alarm.com powered Video Analytics. The latest technology comes with robust features that allow you to keep an eye of activity in and around your home.

What is a virtual tripwire?

We know you are picturing Home Alone or Parent Trap in your head right now! But we don’t mean a tripwire that is going to physically trip someone. We are talking a virtual tripwire here! In principle it works the same way, it can stop a person from causing damage in an area they shouldn’t be in. By identifying areas that a person or vehicle has to move through in order to get to your home you can set up real time notifications to alert of you of the activity. These alerts are accompanied with a video clip so you can identify whether or not you recognize the person or vehicle.

Setting up a tripwire over your driveway is a great way of knowing who drove your teenager home or setting up the tripwire on your porch will let you know if they walked them to the door. You can also be alerted of package deliveries, see who ran over your decorative planter or keep an on those pesky door to door sales people wandering your block.

Real-Time Notifications from Video Analytics

One of the reasons you have a home security system installed is so you can be more aware of the activity in and around your home. But it is impossible to watch a live feed all day and it’s annoying to receive alerts for every movement that is detected. The new Pro Video with Analytics trigger alerts based on specific data points that you program. It’s good to know who approaches your front door, but you don’t necessarily want to receive a notification every day when the postal carrier drops off your bundle of junk mail and bills. It’s easy to start tuning out alerts when you become inundated with them, but you don’t want to miss alerts that could be critical.

Here’s an easy example of how Pro Video with Analytics can help reduce the number of alerts you receive but still keep you informed. You might not want to be alerted of the mail or newspaper delivery, but you do want to know when an unwanted guest, door-to-door salesperson or any unexpected guest is lingering outside your home. Groundzone triggers are perfect for this. Set up a zone in front of a door and when an human size object lingers in that area more than your specified amount of time you will receive the alert. This could simply be a surprise visit from the grandparents – if so…use your Alarm.com app to unlock your smart lock and let them inside!
